Are you a nutrition coach, gym owner or health coach looking for ways to take your business to the next level and connect with more clients? If so then this blog post is for you! We are going to show you why its so important to grow an email list as a nutrition coach!
Are clients on social media not the engaged audience you would like them to be? Is your coaching business falling flat on sign ups despite your Instagram post and Facebook friends?
Believe it or not, it’s not just about having killer recipes and building a nutrition plan. First you have to find an ideal client to join your tribe! A great way to do that is to grow your email list! Potential clients will sign up for your nutrition or health coaching email list if you provide them some type of free valuable content.
In the email marketing world, we call this free content a lead magnet or opt in offer. There are many types of lead magnets that can make great content. Common opt ins are nutrition cheat sheets, quizzes, PDF guides and Ebooks.
In this blog post we are going to break down three ways to grow an email list as a nutrition coach using an EBook!
What Is An Email List?
An email list is just what it sounds like! A list of names and emails. How these emails are obtained makes this list special. As a business owner potential clients have to opt in to your email list essentially giving you permission to email them content. Typically people only give permission to you if they are interested in receiving communication from you.
New email subscribers are like gold. When prospective clients click that opt in box from a lead magnet, and become a new subscriber, from that point forward you have permission to send them email marketing until they tell you not to.
Spamming people or emailing people as a business without their permission is not legal. Email marketing is governed in the U.S. by the CAN-SPAM Act. This law regulates commercial email requirements and gives subscribers the option to unsubscribe from your list. They set forth penalties for violations of this law.
Following this law is not complicated and they have put forth some guidelines regarding commercial email marketing.
Don’t use false or misleading information in your header. This means that the “from” and “to” including the domain name must be accurate.
Don’t use deceptive subject lines. Your subject line must clearly and accurately reflect the content of your message.
Identify your message as an ad. If your message is an advertisement selling something, that intent must be clearly disclosed.
Your email must tell people where you are located. This means your gym or nutrition coaching business address must listed. It is ok to use a P.O. Box.
You must clearly define to the recipient how they can opt out of future messages. These opt out requests must be handled in 30 days or less. It’s not uncommon for the “unsubscribe” button to be present at the very bottom of an email.
Monitor what your email marketing company is doing on your behalf. This simply means that if you hire an email marketing service to send emails for you, it is still your responsibility to make sure they are following the CAN-SPAM rules.
Why Is It So Important To Grow An Email List As A Nutrition Coach Or Health Coaching Business?
Having a sign up form to collect email addresses is important for any business! Nutrition or health coaches or no different. So many times we see gym owners and nutrition coaches without an email list. Mostly because they don’t understand the importance, but also because they are not tech savvy. They have never learned a great way to collect email addresses and use email marketing as a strategy to retain and entertain their audience.
Coaches and owners spend so much time building up their audience on social media platforms but don’t focus on one of the best ways to convert leads into customers; an email list.
Having an email list is important because:
You don't own Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Linked In, TikTok or Twitter.
At any moment your account could be suspended or blocked for no reason. I know of this happening several times to people who have had thousands of followers. They are immediately lost because the only way they had to communicate with their audience was social media.
It's cost effective marketing
Sending emails to people is free. There is no printing or postal cost associated with email marketing. You will probably pay for some type of email marketing software, however the cost is minimal compared to postage and paper.
You create brand awareness
Email marketing isn’t always about selling. In fact, only 1 in 10 emails should be about a sale. The other emails are going to provide some type of free value, similar to how you provided the free value that enticed the person to sign up for your list to begin with.
Speaking to your audience their struggles, new trends and tips and tricks is a great way to keep them engaged and entertained between the times you have something to sell to them.
Segmented Messaging
You have the ability with most email marketing software to segment your list of subscribers into groups so you can better personalize messaging.
For example, say you have an opt in offer that targets ladies who want to lose weight. Additionally you have an offer that speaks about sports performance nutrition. You can send messages about losing weight to only the people interested in that subject. Same goes for the sports performance group. Sending them messages about ladies losing weight wouldn’t make much sense. Segmented messaging makes nurturing both audiences possible.
Now that we have covered what an email list is and the importance of having one, let’s talk about how you can grow an email list as a nutrition coach using an Ebook as a lead magnet.
3 Ways To Use An EBook To Grow Your Email List
An Ebook is a lead magnet. It’s a great way to entice a potential client to join your email list. You provide some type of value in your Ebook. In order for them to receive the EBook they have to leave their name and email address. As soon as they use the “opt in form” to enter their info, the Ebook is sent to them and they can access it in their inbox.
Ebooks, or “electronic books” are a digital version of a book. A lot of times they are shorter than regular books and range from a wide range of topics. If you are an HSN Mentoring client, we provide multiple Ebooks for our clients to use as lead magnets.
If you are not a mentoring client, using a tool like Canva to create an Ebook is an option. They have a ton of templates available.
Option #1 - Social Media
Promote your Ebook on social media. Typically we see gym owners use Instagram and Facebook. Those are both great platforms to promote an Ebook.
Create an infographic associated with your Ebook topic.
Create a caption that leads people to your link in bio.
Create a link in your bio that directs people to a landing page dedicated for them to opt in to your email list by requesting the Ebook.
Option #2 - Create A Pop Up On Your Website
Pop ups work! I’ve heard clients say they are annoyed by pop ups, however I believe that when done right – they work! Too many pop ups are annoying, but one on the home or exit page is a great way to get someones attention and direct them to a freebie!
Here is an example of the Grow Your Nutrition Business website pop up on the homepage. The lead magnet is called “The Top 5 Mistakes People Make When Trying To Lose Weight”.
After people fill out the form, they are sent the PDF which speaks to the Top 5 Mistakes. From their they are entered into an email drip campaign that continues to connect with them about topics related to losing weight.
Option #3 - Use A Blog To Add An Ebook Opt In
Adding an opt in link to a blog post is a great way to educate and help clients not only through the the blog post, but also by them opting in for your ebook.
Blogs are important for businesses because they improve SEO, they establish authority in your niche, they increase brand awareness, and they engage customers. All of these things combined generate more leads and sales.
Placing an opt in for your educational ebook in a blog, your are extremely likely to get new subscribers to your list!

It’s not just about promoting your nutrition and health coaching services. It’s about engaging your audience, and establishing your authority on the subject of nutrition and wellness.
When your people are ready to buy, they are going to turn to you because they know, like and trust you from the months of consistent emails.
